Garment Sewing Skills Workshop

Take your garment sewing to the next level by learning a variety of professional sewing and finishing techniques! Have you ever looked at a ready-to-wear garment and wondered how its seams look so clean and polished? Or have wished the garments you sew had that same professional finish? This class will introduce you to the techniques that give handmade clothing a high-quality look and feel.

During this hands-on class, you'll learn and practice a variety of essential garment construction and finishing techniques, to know when you should use them in your own projects. Samples made during class will include:

  • 5/8 Standard seam zigzag vs. serger

  • French seam

  • Flat-felled seam

  • Under-stitch with facing

  • Sewing a dart

  • Apply bias tape/Hong Kong seam finish

  • Install an invisible zipper

In addition to these techniques, we'll cover common garment sewing terminology and pattern vocabulary to help you better understand sewing instructions and make informed decisions about which techniques are best suited for your projects. Whether you're looking to improve the quality of your handmade garments or expand your sewing skills, you'll leave this class with practical techniques you can apply to future sewing projects.

Instructor: Kenzie Mills
Instructor Bio: Hi everyone! I'm Kenzie, the manager at Select Sewing. I earned my bachelor's degree in Fashion Design with a minor in Studio Art from Indiana University Bloomington (Go Hoosiers!). My passion is garment construction, and I love creating one-of-a-kind clothing that reflects personal style and creativity. During my time in fashion school, I designed, drafted the patterns for, and sewed an original five-look collection from the ground up—a project that strengthened my skills in every stage of the design and construction process. Beyond garment sewing, I'm also a handweaver and enjoy creating fabric from scratch before turning it into finished garments and textiles. I love exploring the creative possibilities of fiber arts and finding new ways to incorporate handmade materials into my work. Outside of sewing, I'm a proud cat mom to Millie and Nina, who always keep life interesting and make sure I take plenty of breaks from the sewing machine. I love sharing what I've learned and helping others build confidence in their sewing skills. Whether you're making your very first garment or looking to refine your techniques, I'm excited to help you build confidence, learn new skills, and create clothing you'll be proud to wear.
